What Actually Decides Your Price in Bangalore

The rate card is the same across the city, so anybody quoting you a different band because of your neighbourhood is making it up. What genuinely moves a job inside its band is access, and access has four components worth knowing about before you call anybody.

First, the lift. If you're above the second floor and the building has a goods lift, you need a slot, and the estate office decides when that is rather than you. On the higher floors the slot length matters more than the size of your household, because every item makes a round trip and the lift doesn't hurry. Where there's no lift at all, and that's most of the older stock in south and west Bangalore, the price follows the floor count and the turn at the landing rather than the box count.

Second, where the vehicle can stand. A compound you can load inside is worth real money against a road where a truck gets moved on. Third, the road itself, which is a vehicle-size question: several older layouts and most village lanes will not take a full sized truck, so we bring something smaller and do an extra run, and that costs hours rather than saving them. Fourth, trip count, which is the big one and is decided at survey rather than on the day.

None of that is guesswork if somebody has looked. All of it is guesswork if they haven't, which is the whole argument for insisting on a survey even for a job that feels small.

Timing a Move in This City

Load through the middle of the morning. Both edges of the day are slow everywhere in Bangalore and there is nothing anybody can do about that except not be in it. A move loaded by noon and unloaded by four is a calm one whatever the distance, and on a cross city job that single choice is worth more than any negotiation over the rate.

There's a local wrinkle worth knowing. In the tech belts the traffic peaks aren't the city's peaks, they're the campus shift changes, and around Electronic City Phase 1 or the Outer Ring Road office parks those are sharper and less forgiving. Mid morning is often genuinely empty in those areas while the rest of the city is still busy.

Then there's the month, and this one costs people money without their noticing. The last weekend of a month is the most contested slot in Bangalore because leases turn over together, and by then you are choosing from what's left rather than choosing a date. A midweek day in the middle of the month gets you a better position in the band, an emptier road and your pick of lift slots. If your dates flex at all, that's the cheapest saving available.

April to June is its own season. Families move to fit the gap between school years, demand concentrates hard, and the good weekend dates go weeks out. If you're moving with children, book when the results come out rather than when the holidays start.

The Paperwork Your Building Will Want, and How Long It Takes

This is the part that most often derails a Bangalore move, and none of it is the mover's to obtain. Apartment societies here deal with residents rather than contractors, so the lift booking, the gate pass and the no dues letter are all yours to raise. We supply whatever they ask about us: vehicle registration, crew names, timings.

The slow one is the no dues letter confirming maintenance is cleared, which most gated communities want before a loaded vehicle leaves. It goes through an association office keeping its own hours and it will not be hurried on a Saturday morning by somebody with a truck outside. Start it a fortnight ahead. If you're moving between two flats in the same township you still need it at both ends, which surprises nearly everybody.

Several societies also hold a refundable deposit against damage to lifts and common areas, released after somebody walks the corridor. Ask how much and how it comes back. Then ask us to pad the lift and run the corridor before the first box moves, which protects your money as much as the building.

Three weeks of notice makes all of that comfortable. Two is workable. Less than that and you are relying on somebody in an association office doing you a favour.

Storage, and Where Ours Actually Is

Our storage is in Bangalore, and this is the one city where we'll say that without a caveat. If you're moving within the city or into or out of it, storage is a straightforward part of the job rather than a separate adventure.

It comes up constantly here because lease dates and possession dates rarely line up. A lease ends on the thirtieth, the new place is free on the fifth, and something has to happen in between. For a gap beyond about three days storage is usually the right answer. Under three days it rarely justifies the double handling, and we'll tell you that rather than sell you a unit.

Two things to insist on, from us or anybody. A numbered inventory taken before anything goes in, with your copy kept off the vehicle. And a defined period at a stated rate, because open ended is how a fortnight quietly becomes a three month bill. Also budget for two moves rather than one: the leg out of storage is a full job with a full crew, not a delivery, and the leg people book in a hurry is the leg that goes wrong.

Moving Out of Bangalore, and Into It

A great deal of what we do is people leaving the city or arriving in it, and the packing standard changes for distance rather than staying the same. Cartons get filled to the top with the voids packed out so nothing settles, fragiles are double wrapped, screens travel crated and upright, and the load is built and strapped in layers rather than stacked. A load packed to local standards and then driven eight hundred kilometres arrives looking like it was driven eight hundred kilometres.

Interstate is priced in two parts and you should ask for both separately: the household at its local band, and the distance at roughly Rs 15 to Rs 20 per km up to 200 km, Rs 18 to Rs 24 for 200 to 500 km, and Rs 20 to Rs 28 beyond that. A single lump sum for a route isn't necessarily wrong, it's just not something you can check.

Delivery on a long run is a window rather than an appointment. Loading takes the hours it takes, a driver has sensible limits, and a truck shares the road with everybody else. Anybody promising you an hour is guessing, so plan a bag of essentials and somewhere to sleep that doesn't depend on the bed arriving.

How to Tell a Real Quote From a Hook

Bangalore has a lot of movers and the underquoting pattern is consistent enough to describe. A low figure over the phone with no survey, then on the day the load is bigger than described, a second vehicle is suddenly needed, material is billed separately, and the bill has grown by half. By then your things are on a truck and your position is gone.

Four questions expose it, and ask them of us as readily as of anyone. Is packing material included in this figure or billed separately. Does it cover loading and unloading or only transport. What size vehicle is coming, and what happens if a second one is needed. And have you actually surveyed my household. A quote that won't answer those four in writing isn't a quote.

A figure well below the bottom of a published band is a warning rather than a bargain, because somebody is either planning to add to it later or planning to send two people to do a four person job, and the second is how furniture gets damaged.
