Bike Shifting in Nemom

Most moves into Nemom run one way: out of a rented flat in the city and into a house somebody has spent a couple of years building on the southern side. This is the stretch along the national highway towards Balaramapuram, with the railway station on one hand and plotted development on the other. Roads are wider than in the old city, plots are bigger, and most houses are independent and at ground level. For moving a bike, that's close to ideal.

The recurring snag is that the house isn't always quite finished when the truck arrives. And one thing that is often unfinished is the permanent power connection. The wiring is done, the board has been applied to, but the meter isn't fixed or the connection isn't energised yet. Families move in on temporary power from the construction connection, a neighbour's supply or a generator, and wait for the permanent one.

For a petrol bike, that hardly matters, apart from charging a phone. For an electric scooter, it matters a great deal. The scooter needs a socket to charge, and the temporary supply may not be suitable, may be shared, or may not be there at all.

So plan the scooter's first days.

Ask the neighbours, too. On a plotted stretch, the houses around yours may have been through the same wait. They will know how long the board took, whether the temporary supply is reliable, and whether anyone nearby has a charging point you might use for a few days.

Find out where the power stands, in writing if you can. Ask the builder or the electrician whether the permanent connection is live, and if not, when it's expected. Electricity board timelines slip, so treat any date as an estimate.

Charge fully before the move. Bring the scooter to the new house with a full battery. Depending on your daily riding, that may last several days.

Plan a backup. One is enough, as long as you've checked it actually works for your scooter's charger. A relative or friend nearby with a suitable socket, a workplace with charging, or a public charging point in the area. Check these exist before you rely on them. If the battery is removable, it can be charged indoors anywhere with a normal socket.

Don't improvise wiring. It's tempting in the first week, and it's the one shortcut worth refusing. Running a long extension from a construction board or a neighbour's house to charge a scooter overnight is how fires start. Use a proper socket on a suitable circuit, or wait.

When the permanent power comes on, and it will, usually sooner than it feels in the first week, have the electrician check the circuit and socket the scooter will use. A dedicated point near the parking, on its own breaker, is ideal.

For a petrol bike, the only power related point is the parking light, and that is easily solved with a torch or a daylight slot. A dark porch on a new plot makes loading and unloading harder. Schedule the delivery for daylight.
