Bike Shifting in Kowdiar

Kowdiar is one of the older established residential parts of Thiruvananthapuram. Large plots, substantial houses, mature gardens and families who have been in the same property for a long time. Plenty of those homes keep dogs, and in a big compound the dogs usually have the run of the grounds. That's part of what keeps the house secure.

On moving day, it's a problem to plan around. A crew arriving at the gate, opening it, walking up the drive and wheeling a bike back past the porch is exactly what a guard dog is there to stop. Even a friendly family dog can get excited, jump at someone carrying a load, slip out of an open gate or get under the wheels of a bike being pushed.

So secure the dogs before the crew arrive.

Put them inside the house, ideally an hour before the crew are due so they've settled, in a room away from the route the bike will take, or in a kennel or run with the door shut. Tie them only if they're used to it and the tie is well clear of the drive. Someone in the family, or the staff member who handles them, should stay with them while the crew are on the property.

Keep the gate managed. When a truck is outside and the gate is open, a dog that gets loose can be on the road in seconds. Make sure the dogs are secured before the gate opens, and that nobody opens a door to the dogs' room until the gate is shut again.

Tell us when you book. Let us know there are dogs on the property, how many, and whether they'll be secured. The partner crew can then wait at the gate until someone confirms it's safe to come in.

Think about the route. In a big compound it's longer than it looks. The bike may be in a garage at the back of the compound, under a porch or in a side shed. The crew will walk it from there to the gate. Clear the route of anything a dog has dragged out, a chewed toy, a water bowl, a lead, so nobody trips while steering the bike.

If the household move is happening on the same day, the dogs may need to stay secured for several hours, or be taken to a relative or a boarding kennel for the day. That's often kinder than hours shut in a room with strangers coming and going.

Warn the neighbours if your dogs are known to bark at trucks. A moving lorry outside the gate on a quiet street can set off every dog on the road, and a word to the house next door saves surprise.

Think about the staff too. A driver or gardener who usually feeds or walks the dogs is the best person to keep them calm, and should know the time the crew are due.

At the new house, the same applies in reverse. Keep the dogs inside while the bike is unloaded and wheeled to its place.
