Bike Shifting in Vattiyoorkavu

The east of Thiruvananthapuram climbs, and Vattiyoorkavu climbs with it. Plots here were cut into slopes rather than laid out flat, and many houses sit above or below the road outside, on their own compound. Where the house is below the gate, the drive drops steeply to the porch. Where it's above, a set of steps or a ramp climbs to the door. Newer flats have gone up on the wider stretches toward Peroorkada and Vazhayila; behind them, the lanes get steeper and narrower the further in you go.

Most people who live on a slope ride their bike down the drive in the evening and back up in the morning without thinking about it. They know where the surface is rough, where it's slippery after rain, and how much throttle the climb needs.

On moving day, the bike usually leaves the other way: pushed up the drive to a carrier waiting on the road. A crew pushing a heavy motorcycle up a steep slope they don't know needs care.

So plan the climb.

Decide who brings the bike up. If you ride it up every morning, the simplest option is that you ride it up the drive to the gate yourself, stop on the level at the top, and hand it over there. The crew then only need to wheel it from the gate to the truck.

If someone else must push it, use two or three people. At the front, one person steers with fingers resting on the brake lever, ready to hold the bike if it starts to roll back. The others push from behind and to the side, never directly behind the rear wheel. On a very steep drive, a third person with a hand on the rear grab rail helps.

Check the surface. Old drives are often concrete with a rough or broken finish, sometimes with moss in the shaded parts. After rain, moss is as slippery as ice. Sweep loose gravel and leaves off the drive the evening before, and if it rained overnight, wait for the surface to dry or put down a strip of sacking for grip.

Watch the gate. A gate set at the top of a slope often has a raised threshold or a drain. The front wheel has to lift over it at the end of the climb, which is exactly when the bike is hardest to control. Approach it straight, not at an angle.

Choose the vehicle. Vattiyoorkavu's narrow lanes may not take a large truck. A smaller carrier can often reach the gate, while a larger one may need to wait on a wider road nearby. The survey will tell us which.

At the delivery end, if the new house is also on a slope, the same thinking applies in reverse: going down is just as tricky as coming up.
