Bike Shifting in Kalamassery

Kalamassery is an industrial and academic town that happens to sit inside a city. The university campus and the colleges around it empty and refill on the academic calendar, which means small moves in large numbers within a very short window. Students, research scholars and young staff live in hostels, PGs and shared houses, and many of them have a scooter or a motorcycle.

Hostels and PGs are careful about what leaves their premises. A bike rolling out of the gate is something security wants to check: is it the resident's own, has the resident cleared their dues, has the warden or manager approved it? In many places, a vehicle leaving for good needs a signed gate pass or a line in the register, and the security guard won't open the gate without it.

On an ordinary day, getting that signature is easy. In the last week of term, when half the hostel is leaving and the warden's office has a queue out of the door, it can take a day or two. A bike collection booked without it may find the carrier waiting at the gate while you chase a signature.

So arrange it early.

Ask the warden or the PG manager what they need for a bike to leave. Often it's the RC, proof that the bike is yours or a family member's, a no dues note from the accounts office, and a signed form or a register entry.

Clear your dues first. Mess fees, room rent, fines for late returns or damage: anything outstanding can hold up the sign out. Settle them before the final week if you can.

Get the sign out a day or two before the collection, not on the morning. A signed gate pass usually has a date on it; make sure it covers the collection day.

Tell security. Guards change shifts, so tell the one on duty that morning too. Show the guard the pass and tell them when the carrier is coming, so they know to expect it.

If you're leaving before the bike, arrange a stand in: a friend staying longer, with the key, the pass and a copy of the RC. Make sure the pass names them, or that the warden knows.

Lock the bike while you wait. In the last days of term, hostel parking is crowded with bikes being moved, sold and collected, and a key left in a bike for convenience is an invitation. Keep the key with you or your stand in until the crew arrive.

If you're selling the bike to a junior instead of moving it, the hostel will still want a sign out for the change of owner. Ask what they need for that.

Think about the date. End of term is when every hostel empties together, and carriers are busiest then too. If your bike can go a few days earlier, or a week later when you've settled elsewhere, it's often easier.

Some hostels let residents charge electric scooters from a common point, with a small fee. Settle it before you ask for the sign out. At booking, mention the maker and say if the battery is fixed in place.
