Bike Shifting in Edappally

Edappally is a junction first and a neighbourhood second. Two highways cross here, the flyover funnels traffic into a few lanes, and there is no time of day when a truck can stand near the junction for long. A bike collection is planned around short windows and side roads. Add the monsoon, and there is a second thing to plan around.

Kochi's rain is serious. During the heavy months, a red or orange alert can come with a day's notice, and a downpour can bring water across low roads within minutes. For a bike move, the question is simple: go or wait?

Here's how to decide.

Look at the forecast the evening before and again in the morning. A light drizzle is no problem; bikes travel in the rain all the time, and the crew have covers. A warning for very heavy rain is different. Roads may flood, the truck may be held up, and loading on a wet ramp is riskier.

Think about the distance. A local run across Kochi can usually wait a few hours for the worst of a downpour to pass. A long run inland can often go, because it leaves the rain behind within a few hours.

Think about the access, too, and the route the carrier will take around the junction. If the bike is in a basement that floods, or on a ground floor plot that takes water, moving it before the rain arrives may be safer than leaving it.

Talk to us. If the morning looks bad, we'll talk it through with you and the partner crew. Moving the slot by a few hours, or a day, is often simple. Don't feel obliged to go ahead in conditions that make you uneasy.

If the bike does go in the rain, a few things protect it.

Cover the switches. Rain gets into handlebar switch housings and the ignition. A strip of tape over the ignition and a plastic bag over each switch cluster, taped at the bottom, keeps most of it out.

Protect the seat. Foam that soaks up a monsoon shower stays damp for days and starts to smell. A plastic bag or a cover over the seat stops the foam soaking up water. A soaked seat takes days to dry.

Cover the instrument panel, especially on newer bikes with digital displays, where condensation can form under the glass.

On an open carrier, the crew use a waterproof cover over the padding. Ask for one if it's raining.

Check the delivery address's drainage too. A new building with a basement that takes water, or a compound that floods in a downpour, isn't the place to leave a bike that arrived wet. Ask where water collects, and park the bike on the highest covered spot available until the rain eases.

Dry it at the other end. Once the bike is unloaded, remove the covers, wipe it down, and let it dry in a covered spot before you start it.
