Bike Shifting in Kakkanad

Kakkanad is where a lot of Kochi's working population lives now. Infopark and the SEZ pulled the jobs east, the Collectorate moved out here, and towers went up along the Seaport Airport Road and the roads off it. People arrive for a posting, take a flat on an eleven month agreement, and many move again the moment that agreement ends or the job changes.

That cycle is predictable, which is useful. You know the end date months in advance. The household move is usually planned around it, with a lift slot and a gate pass booked. The bike is the part that tends to drift to the end, because it feels small and can be ridden anywhere at short notice.

The trouble is what happens on the last day. The association often cancels the parking sticker, the access card and the gate pass for the flat on the date the agreement ends, or when the keys are handed back. If the bike is still in the basement then, getting it out can mean a conversation at the security desk, a call to the owner, or a wait for the association office to open. And if you've already handed back the keys and the access card, you may not be able to reach the bike at all without someone letting you in.

So book the bike's slot before the end date, not on it.

A few days before is ideal. The bike leaves while you still have full access, the sticker is still valid, and the security staff still recognise you. If you'll need the bike until the last day for work, book the collection for the morning of the final day, before the handover meeting, not after.

Tell the association or security the date the bike is leaving, in writing if they keep a register. Some towers want a gate pass for the bike itself, listing its registration number. Ask them what they need.

If the new place isn't ready yet, plan where the bike goes in between. A friend's parking, the new building's visitor parking if they agree, or a later collection from the old tower with the owner's permission. Settle that before the end date.

Return the parking sticker or access card for the bike as part of the handover, and get it noted, so the deposit isn't held over a missing card.

Check the new building's rules before the agreement ends, too, since sticker and access requests rarely clear overnight. If your next flat is in another Kakkanad tower, it will want the bike's details for its own sticker or access list, and that can take a few days to process. Start it while you are still in the old flat, so the bike has somewhere to go on the day it leaves.

If you are moving out of Kerala entirely at the end of the agreement, plan the bike's long distance run to leave a day or two before you do.
