Bike Shifting in Eloor

Eloor grew up around industry. The FACT works and the wider Udyogamandal belt shaped the place, and much of the housing followed: company quarters and staff accommodation alongside the ordinary town housing next to them. A lot of moves here are tied to a posting, a transfer or a retirement rather than a rental cycle, and the quarters come with their own handover checks and gate lists.

Retirement moves have a pattern of their own. Someone who has worked at the plant for thirty years is leaving for a hometown, a child's city, or a house they've been building. The household goes with them. The bike sometimes doesn't. The motorcycle they rode to the gate every morning is offered to a younger colleague in the quarters, sold for a token amount, or simply handed over as a gift.

It's a kind tradition, and it works well, provided the ownership changes properly before the seller leaves.

The reason is simple. Until the registration is transferred, the bike stays in the retiree's name. Any fine, any accident, any problem with the insurance comes back to them, possibly at an address they've already left. And once they've moved to another district or state, completing the transfer becomes much harder, because the RTO process needs signatures and documents from both sides.

So do it before the move.

Agree the terms clearly, whether it's a sale or a gift, and settle any money before the paperwork starts, so nothing is left to discuss after you've gone. Put it on paper in a short sale letter or deed, with the date, the bike's registration number, the chassis and engine numbers, the price if any, and both signatures. Keep a copy each.

Start the transfer of ownership at the RTO. In Kerala, much of this can begin online through the vehicle services portal, with the forms signed by both parties, the RC, insurance, pollution certificate and ID and address proofs. If there's a loan on the bike, it has to be closed and the hypothecation removed first.

Transfer the insurance to the new owner, or have them take a new policy from the date of the sale. Don't let the bike run on a policy in the old owner's name.

Tell the quarters' administration. They'll want the change noted against both flats, the retiree's and the new owner's. The bike's vehicle pass or sticker was issued to the retiree. The new owner may need their own, and the old one should be returned with the quarters.

Say goodbye to the bike properly, too. A motorcycle ridden to the same gate for decades carries memories, and some retirees like a last photograph of it with the colleagues they worked beside. It costs nothing and is often the part people remember.

Keep a copy of the transfer acknowledgement in your own papers. Once the RTO has processed the change, the new owner's name appears on the online record, and it is worth checking a few weeks later that it has gone through.

Hand over everything: both keys, the RC, the service book and any spare parts or tools that came with the bike.
