Bike Shifting in Vidyapeeta

The Vidyapeeta packers page is about the half packed house: people start packing a fortnight early to save money, then live among cartons that make the last days harder. A bike can fall into the same trap.

Keen owners read the preparation list and start early. A week before the move, they ride the tank down to reserve. They unscrew the mirrors. They empty the seat compartment, take off the phone mount and put the cover on. Then they realise they still need the bike: for the bank, the gas agency, the school, the last trips to the old house's owner, the hardware shop for packing tape.

Riding on reserve, without mirrors, for a week of errands is how people run out of fuel at a junction, or get stopped at a checkpoint. A bike that's half prepared is worse than one that isn't prepared at all.

The fix is simple: keep the bike in normal use until the last two days.

A week before: nothing on the bike itself. Make a list of what you'll do, and check the papers. Find the RC, insurance and pollution certificate, make copies, and book the collection. That's all.

Two days before: start the run down. Stop filling the tank, and use the bike as normal so the level falls naturally. If you're far from reserve, plan a couple of longer errands.

The evening before: empty the seat compartment, take off the phone mount and any bags, and switch off any alarm. Leave the mirrors on unless they're the kind that must come off; the crew fold or pad them.

The morning of collection: hand over the key, the copies of the papers and the bike. Keep the originals and the spare key with you.

Mind the alarm and any tracker, too. Switch the alarm off the evening before, not a week early, or you'll ride for days without it. If a GPS tracker sends alerts when the bike moves, tell the app the bike is going on a carrier that morning.

If you have two bikes, prepare them at different times. The one you'll need until the end stays in use; the one you won't can be prepared earlier.

There's another reason not to prepare too early. Fuel left low for a week in a hot parking spot can leave the tank dry enough for condensation in the monsoon, and a bike that's been covered and untouched for days can develop a flat battery if it has an alarm drawing current.

And if the move date slips, as dates sometimes do, a bike you haven't touched yet is simply a bike you keep riding.

Keep a small kit by the door for that last morning, ready before the crew knock: the key, the spare key, the papers' copies in an envelope, and the phone mount and bag you've taken off. Then nothing is hunted for while the crew wait at the gate.

Think about the helmet, too. You'll need it right up to the last ride. Pack it last, with you, not in the cartons.

Plan your last errands with the bike in mind. Put the far ones early in the week and the close ones near the end, so the tank empties naturally on schedule.

An electric scooter doesn't need running down; it travels with whatever charge it has. Keep using and charging it normally until the day, and pack the charger only on the final morning. Mention the EV's make when booking.
