Bike Shifting in Vasanthpura

Inside Bangalore, sending one bike by carrier costs a few thousand rupees, set by distance and access; going intercity, the kilometres add more. For a new or valuable bike, that's an easy decision. For a ten year old commuter scooter whose resale value might be only a few times the moving cost, it deserves a moment's thought.

There are three honest options.

Ride it. If the new address is in Bangalore, the bike is road legal, insured and running well, and you're a confident rider, riding it across the city is free. Do it on a quiet morning, by a route you know, with nothing strapped to it. Take the household's small things in the lorry, not on the scooter's footboard.

Sell it here and buy at the new place. For a long move to another city, or if the scooter needs work soon anyway, selling it locally and buying a similar used one at the destination can cost less than carrying it, and saves the re-registration work for a move to another state. Get a realistic price by checking listings for the same model and year.

Move it by carrier. If the bike is in good condition, you're attached to it, the distance is long, or nobody can ride it, a carrier is still the sensible choice. Many people simply prefer not to ride across Bangalore traffic, and that's a perfectly good reason.

A few things help with the decision.

Check the bike's real condition. Tyres, brakes, battery, chain and any oil leak. If it needs Rs 3,000 of work in the next month, that changes the sums.

Check the paperwork. If the registration still names a previous owner, or the insurance has lapsed, selling is harder and riding is not allowed until it's sorted.

Think about how you'll use it. A scooter you need on the first morning at the new place is worth having there. A scooter that will sit unused because the new office is on the metro line might be better sold.

If you decide to ride, plan the ride. Check the tyres and brakes the day before, fill only what you need for the trip, wear a proper helmet, and avoid peak hours. Don't carry a passenger with a bag on their lap.

Be fair to yourself about attachment, too. A scooter that took you through college or your first job may be worth more to you than any listing says. If you'd rather keep it, keep it, and move it properly. The arithmetic is a guide, not a rule.

If you decide to sell, sell before you move, so you're not managing a buyer from the new address. And hand over the RC transfer forms properly.
