Rentals in Tavarekere change hands through brokers a great deal, and a broker who has just found you a flat often has a list of other services to offer. Painters, cleaners, a cable connection, a packing team, and sometimes a person who will "handle the bike". The offer is usually made kindly and at the moment you are busiest, which is why so many tenants simply say yes.

There is nothing wrong with a referral. The trouble is what you don't see. The broker rarely moves the bike personally. They pass the job to a contact, who may pass it on again, and the price you are quoted includes a share for each step. The person who turns up on the day may have no idea what was promised, and when a mirror arrives cracked or a side panel scuffed, it is hard to know whom to ask. The broker says it was the transporter. The transporter says the broker agreed the price and never mentioned the damage cover.

So before you accept, ask three plain questions. First, which company will actually collect the bike, and can you see its name, address and phone number? Second, what does the quoted figure include: the loading, the padding, the transit cover, the delivery to the parking at the other end? Third, whom do you call if something goes wrong, and is that promise written down anywhere?

If the answers are vague, call the transporter yourself. Ask them for a quote directly, and compare. Very often the direct figure is lower, because nobody in the middle needs paying, and you also get a single point of contact who is responsible for the bike from pickup to delivery.

When a broker does book the job properly, with the mover's name on the receipt and a written quote you have seen, it can work perfectly well. The point is to know who you have hired, not to refuse help. A bike handed over to a stranger whose name you don't know is the situation to avoid.

Keep your own records either way. Photograph the bike before collection from all four sides, note the odometer reading, and keep the receipt with the mover's details. If a dispute arises, those photos and that receipt are what settle it, not anyone's memory of a phone call.

Watch for the small signs of a chain. If the person quoting you can't say what vehicle will come, or tells you the price will be "confirmed on the day", or asks for an advance in cash with no receipt, the job is probably being passed along. A real mover can tell you the vehicle type, the crew size and the slot, and will put the figure in writing before collection. Ask the broker to put you in touch with the transporter directly, and see how the conversation goes.

Nor should you feel awkward about declining. Brokers make these offers routinely and most accept a polite no. Saying you have already booked the bike elsewhere ends the discussion without fuss.
