Bike Shifting

Bike Shifting in BTM 1st Stage, Bangalore

A large share of scooters and motorcycles in BTM 1st Stage were bought on a two wheeler loan, and many are still on EMI when their owners move. The loan doesn't stop you moving the bike. It does mean there is a third party with an interest in it, and that party expects to know where you and the bike are.

Most two wheeler loan agreements ask the borrower to inform the lender of a change of address. The registration certificate also carries a note of the loan, usually called the hypothecation, which shows the lender's name until the loan is closed and the note removed. In practice, this matters in a few places.

Communication. EMI reminders, notices and statements go to the address the lender has on file. If you move and don't update it, you may miss a letter you needed to see, or a field visit may be made to your old address. Updating it is usually a short form at the branch, through the app, or by email with a proof of the new address.

Long moves. For a bike headed to a different state, the lender's consent can matter for the paperwork there. Registering it afresh under the new state's RTO generally needs a no objection certificate from the original RTO, and while the hypothecation is still on the RC, the lender's no objection is usually needed too. Check the current rules with the lender before you plan the move, because it can take a few weeks to arrive.

Payments. Make sure the EMI keeps going out during the move. If the account it is debited from changes, or a cheque was involved, set up the new arrangement before you go. A missed EMI in the move month is easily done and creates a late fee you didn't need.

Insurance. Lenders usually require the bike to stay insured. If you are updating the policy for the new address, the lender's name should stay on it as the financier.

Closing the loan. If the last few EMIs are due around the time of the move, think about the order of things. Once the loan is repaid, the lender issues a closure letter and a form for removing the hypothecation from the RC, and the RTO then updates the record. If you are moving out of state, it is often simpler to finish that before re-registering, since the bike then carries no lender's interest at all. Ask the lender how long their closure papers take, and keep the originals safe in your own bag rather than in a packed box.

Selling instead. Some owners decide not to move the bike and sell it. A financed bike can be sold, but the loan has to be cleared first or as part of the sale, and the buyer will want the hypothecation removed. That is a longer process than most people expect, so start early if that is the plan.

None of this has to happen before we collect the bike for a local move. But the address update is a two minute task that is easiest to do in the same week as everything else, and for a long move, the lender's no objection is something to request well ahead.

Our BTM 1st Stage packers page discusses whether to ride the bike over or send it. This page covers the loan behind it.

Scooters

Scooter and Scooty Shifting in BTM 1st Stage

Scooter and scooty shifting in BTM 1st Stage on an EMI works the same way as a motorcycle. The scooter can move freely. Just update the lender with the new address, keep the EMI running, and keep the RC, insurance and loan papers together for the move.

Electric

EV Scooter Shifting in BTM 1st Stage

Electric scooters are often bought on finance, and some are financed through the maker's own scheme. Update the address with whoever holds the loan, and note that any battery subscription may also need the new address. When booking, give us the model name and whether the battery comes out.

Intercity

Two Wheeler Transport from BTM 1st Stage to Other Cities

Taking a financed bike to another city or state means more paperwork than a local move. The lender's no objection may be needed for re-registration there, so request it well ahead. The bike transport itself is priced per kilometre and doesn't wait on the loan, but the RTO process at the other end can.

Checklist

Before Your Bike Is Collected in BTM 1st Stage

  • Fuel

Ride the tank down to reserve in the days before collection. A small amount is fine; a full tank is not wanted on a loaded vehicle.

  • Papers

Photocopies of the RC, the insurance policy and your photo ID travel with the bike. Keep the originals, especially the RC, with you. If the RC is not in your name, mention it when you book.

  • Condition record

Photograph the bike from every side and at the odometer. The crew also notes its condition at pickup, and you keep a copy of that note.

  • Insurance

Transit insurance is available on a value you declare. Keep the bike's own motor insurance valid for the journey as well.

  • At delivery

Check the bike against the pickup note and your photographs before signing, and point out anything new while the crew is still there.

  • Handover

If someone else will hand over or receive the bike, tell us who when you book, and we will confirm what they need to have with them.

Good to Know

What a Bike Move Does Not Include

  • We do not ride your bike to the new address. It travels on a vehicle, standing upright and strapped at the frame.
  • Ride the tank down to reserve before pickup. A near empty tank is safer on a loaded vehicle.
  • We do not repair, service or start a bike that will not start. Tell us at booking so it is loaded the right way.
  • Helmets, jackets and tools travel in a carton or with you, never strapped to the bike.
  • RC transfer, address change and re-registration in a new state are yours to do, or an agent's.
