Bike Shifting in Kalasipalyam

Kalasipalyam wakes up early and stays busy late. Buses run from the stand through the night, and the first produce lorries arrive long before sunrise. The bus stand and the markets bring lorries, autos and handcarts into the streets from dawn, and by mid morning a carrier stopping outside a house blocks everything behind it. For a bike collection, the clear window is before the city is up: five or half past five in the morning.

A pre dawn pickup works well, but it isn't the same as a daytime one, and a few things need planning. None of them is hard; all of them are easier done the evening before than at a quarter to five.

Light is the first. Our crew photographs the bike before loading, and writes a condition note. In the dark, photographs miss scratches. So we bring strong torches, and it helps if you switch on every light you can: the porch light, the stair light, a lamp in the window. Park the bike under the best light the night before. If the photographs are taken under a streetlight's orange glow, they show little; a white torch beam is much better.

Noise is the second. Sound carries surprisingly far before dawn, and old houses here have thin windows. A sleeping street hears everything at five in the morning: a carrier's engine, a ramp dropping, straps ratcheting, voices. Our crew lowers the ramp gently, keeps voices down, and doesn't start the bike's engine. A word to your neighbours the evening before helps them forgive the few minutes of noise.

Readiness is the third. Every minute saved at the gate is a minute the street stays quiet. At five, nobody wants to search for keys, empty a boot or move a cycle out of the way. Do all of that the night before. Bike by the door, facing out, steering lock off, boot empty, keys and the envelope of paper copies on a hook inside.

Animals are the fifth. Before dawn, street dogs are at their most territorial, and a crew pushing a bike past a pack can attract attention. A household member who knows the local dogs walking ahead with a torch is a real help. So is a calm, slow pace.

Safety is the fourth. Dark streets have potholes and drains you can't see. The crew walks the bike slowly, with a torch on the ground ahead.

And you need to be awake, of course, to sign the note. Set two alarms. Have tea ready, for yourself and the crew; they have been up even earlier than you.

At the other end, an early collection usually means a morning delivery. Make sure someone at the new address is up and ready to receive the bike, and that their gate or basement is open at that hour.

Charge an electric scooter overnight so it is at the agreed level by five. If its charger is noisy or has a fan, unplug it a little earlier so the morning stays quiet. Mention the maker and battery layout when booking.
