Bike Shifting in HMT Layout

HMT Layout, on the RT Nagar side near Ganganagar, is a settled neighbourhood of independent houses, portions and apartment buildings, and many of the people moving in or out work regular office hours. They can take a morning off for the household move, but not always the whole day. The bike, which often goes on a separate run, can end up arriving when they're back at their desk.

The temptation is to tell the driver to leave the bike in the parking and drop the key in the letterbox. We don't do that, and we'd advise against it.

An unattended bike can be damaged, stolen or tampered with before you get home, and there's no way to know whether the damage happened in transit or after. The condition note has nobody's signature. The key in a letterbox can be fished out. And in a building where you're new, nobody knows the bike is yours if someone asks.

So plan the delivery around who will be there.

Name a receiver. A family member at home, a neighbour you know, the building's watchman, the owner of the house if they live on another floor. Give them a note from you, and tell us their name and number. They walk round the bike with the driver, note any marks, sign and take the key. A watchman can usually receive a bike if the building allows it; ask the owner or association first.

Or hold the delivery. If nobody can receive it during the day, ask for an evening slot, or a slot on the next day off. The bike stays with us, safely, until you're there. Most local deliveries can be fitted into the early evening, though traffic around Hebbal and Bellary Road at that hour can make the timing less precise.

Or swap the order. If you're home in the morning for the household move, have the bike delivered first, before you leave for work, and the household goods later with a family member present.

Whatever you choose, keep your phone on. The driver will call when they're close, and you can talk your receiver through anything unexpected.

Keep the papers with you, or give copies to the receiver, and send them a photo of the bike so they recognise it when it comes off the truck. They don't need the originals to receive the bike, but they should know which bike it is and its registration number.

Check the bike yourself when you get home, even if the receiver signed. Look at it in daylight the next morning if you arrived in the dark, and tell us within a day if anything looks wrong that wasn't on the note. Most people find nothing, but the check is quick.

If the watchman received it, ask where they parked it and whether anyone moved it during the day. A new building's parking can be crowded, and a bike pushed into a corner by another resident is worth knowing about.

And thank your receiver. A neighbour who gave up twenty minutes to check your bike in is a good start in a new building.

An electric scooter delivered to a receiver needs a safe place to stand and shouldn't be plugged in until you've checked the socket. Ask the receiver to leave it unplugged. When you book, name the maker and tell us if the pack can be removed.
