Bike Shifting in Kempapura

Arrivals from abroad are common in Kempapura, and the weeks after landing are busy: a flat to set up, a shipment still clearing, paperwork everywhere. If you left a bike with a friend before you went, collecting it is one of the first jobs. It's a reunion with a vehicle that someone else has been riding, sometimes for years.

Most of the time, the friend has looked after it well. But it's worth checking a few things before the bike comes home, because some of what happened while it was away is still attached to your name.

Start with fines. Traffic challans are issued against the registration number, and that's in your name. Check the online challan portal for anything from the period you were away. A friend may not know about a camera fine, or may have meant to pay and forgotten. Agree how to settle any that appear, and pay them before the bike moves, especially if it might later go to another state.

Then the insurance. Was it renewed while you were away? Did it lapse for a while? Is it still valid now? A lapsed policy needs renewing, and if the gap was long, the insurer may want to inspect the bike first. Check also whether the friend made any claim on it.

The pollution certificate. These lapse every six months or a year depending on the bike, and are easy to forget. Get a new one if it's expired.

The bike's condition. A bike ridden daily by someone else for a couple of years will show it. Look at the tyres, brakes, chain and battery. Check the odometer and compare it with what you remember. Look for any accident repairs. A service soon after you take it back is a good idea, with a mechanic you trust.

The papers and keys. Make sure the RC, insurance copy and both keys come back to you. If the friend had a spare key cut, ask for it.

Ask about anything the friend noticed. Riders who use a bike every day know its habits: a soft front brake, a horn that sometimes fails, a rear tyre that slowly goes flat. A five minute conversation can save a trip to the mechanic, and some friends keep a note of the services they had done.

Be kind about it. A friend who kept your bike running for years did you a favour. Most of these checks are simply about knowing where things stand, not about blame.

Think about thanking them in a practical way. A friend who rode the bike for years has usually paid for fuel, small repairs and perhaps a set of tyres. Some owners settle up for any repairs, others give a service voucher or simply take the friend out. It's worth a conversation, because it keeps the friendship easy and makes the handover smoother.

Then the move. Where the friend lives in another part of Bangalore, the crew collect from their door and bring it to your new home. Tell us their address and number, and when they'll be there to hand it over. Agree in advance who will walk round the bike with the crew, you or them, and photograph it at that point.
