Bike Shifting in Kondotty

The bike tends to come up last and cause the most debate. It's useful, it's paid for, and someone in the family is attached to it. Can it come too?

Technically, often yes. A motorcycle can be shipped overseas in a container, with export paperwork in India and import formalities, duties and registration at the other end. Some people do it, usually for a valuable or much loved motorcycle, or when moving to a country where that model is hard to find.

For most everyday bikes, though, it doesn't make sense, for a few reasons.

The cost. Shipping, export documentation, import duty, port charges, inspection and re-registration abroad can add up to more than the bike is worth, sometimes several times over for a commuter scooter.

The rules. Many countries have strict standards for imported vehicles: emissions, lighting, age limits, right or left hand traffic. A bike legal in Kerala may not be legal to register in the destination at all.

The time. Shipping and clearance take weeks or months, during which the bike isn't with you.

The need. In many destinations, especially in the Gulf, a scooter isn't how most people get around, and a car or public transport may suit the new life better.

So most families choose one of three options.

Sell it. A bike in good condition sells readily in Kerala. Sell it a few weeks before the flight, so the transfer of ownership is done while you're still here to sign.

Leave it with family. A brother or parent who will ride it keeps it healthy and has it ready for visits home. An authority letter, valid insurance and the papers in their hands make this work.

Move it to family elsewhere in India. If the relative who will look after it lives in another district or state, the bike can be carried there before you fly. That's where a mover is useful.

If you do decide to ship a bike abroad, it needs a specialist international shipper and proper export paperwork, which is a different job from a domestic bike move.

The practical choice comes down to three options. Selling makes sense when nobody in the family rides and the bike would only sit. Leaving it at home with a relative works when the house stays in the family and someone will start it every week. Sending it to a relative in another city suits a younger cousin or sibling who needs a ride to college or work and will keep it running.

Whatever you choose, settle it before the visa stamp. The last fortnight before a flight to the Gulf or beyond fills with packing, paperwork and goodbyes, and a half-finished bike sale is easy to forget. If a relative will keep it, sign a short letter authorising them to use it and deal with the insurer, and leave it with the RC copy. If it's going by carrier, book the collection at least a week before the flight, so you can see it delivered.

Shipping an electric scooter abroad adds lithium battery rules to everything else, which makes it even less practical. Leave it with family or sell it. If it's going to a relative within India, give the scooter's name and note whether its cells come out.
