Bike Shifting in Manjeri

Manjeri is the district's biggest town, and much of its housing is rented rather than owned. In a rented house, the move isn't finished when the last carton is on the truck. It's finished when the owner has walked through, agreed the place is as it should be, and released the advance. In this district, that advance is often substantial, and the packers page is about protecting it.

The bike plays a small but visible part in that walk through. Three or four years in one corner of the porch or car shed always leave a bike's mark. An oil stain on the floor where the engine dripped. A black tyre mark on the wall where it was parked too close. Scrapes on the floor tiles from the side stand. A chipped edge on a step where it was bumped up every evening. Rust stains from a metal stand on a wet floor. Sometimes a hook drilled into the wall for a helmet, or a chain fixed to a pillar.

Owners notice these things, because the porch is the first thing they see. A stained, scraped porch sets the tone for the rest of the walk through, even if the rooms inside are spotless.

So deal with the bike's corner before the owner arrives.

Move the bike out first. Ideally, the bike leaves before the final cleaning, so the spot is clear. If it's moving with the household, load it early. If it's going on its own run, book it a day before the walk through.

Clean the oil stain. It's the mark owners spot first. Fresh oil lifts with a degreaser and a stiff brush; older stains need a few goes, or a poultice of washing soda or a commercial concrete cleaner left to sit before scrubbing. On polished tiles, use a gentler cleaner and test it first. A stain that won't fully come out still looks far better faded than black.

Wipe the walls. Tyre marks and handlebar scuffs on painted walls often come off with a damp cloth and a little soap, or a melamine sponge used gently.

Deal with fixings. If you drilled a hook or fixed a chain, ask the owner whether they want it left or removed. If removed, fill the hole neatly.

Check the floor and the steps. Small scrapes and chips from a stand are wear and tear in most owners' eyes, but point them out honestly at the walk through rather than hoping they won't be noticed.

Sweep and wash the whole bike spot last, after everything else is out.

Check the gate and the path as well. The route the bike took in and out every day often has its own marks: a scraped gate post, a chipped kerb, tyre tracks on a whitewashed wall. A quick clean of the path to the gate finishes the job.

If the advance is disputed over the porch, photographs help. Take photos of the cleaned spot before the owner arrives, and, if you have them, the photos from when you moved in.
