Bike Shifting in Kazhakkoottam

Kazhakkoottam works to Technopark's rhythm. Many residents are young, single or sharing, on a first or second posting, and they move often. A lease turns over, a flatmate leaves, a project ends, someone gets a job in another city. In that churn, bikes change hands constantly. The engineer heading back to Bangalore or abroad doesn't want to pay to carry a five year old scooter, so it goes to a colleague who's staying, often for a price both think is fair.

That's sensible on both sides. The problem comes later, if the paperwork is left half done. The seller leaves the state, the registration still shows their name, and the buyer is riding a bike they don't legally own. A camera fine goes to the seller's old address. An insurance claim stalls because the policy holder isn't the rider. And the transfer of ownership, which needs signatures and documents from both sides, becomes very hard once one of them is in another city.

So if you're buying a colleague's bike, settle the papers before they go, and certainly before you move the bike anywhere.

Write a sale letter. One page is enough: the date, the plate number, the frame and engine numbers, the agreed price, and a signature from each of you. Keep a copy each.

Start the transfer of ownership straight away. Waiting for the seller's last week is the most common mistake, because that week fills up with their own move. Kerala lets you begin most of it on the government's online vehicle services site, using forms signed by both seller and buyer, the RC, insurance, a pollution certificate and ID and address proof from both. If the seller had a loan on the bike, the lender's clearance and the removal of the hypothecation come first.

Move the insurance. A claim made on a policy still in the seller's name is the one that goes wrong, usually at the worst moment, after a scrape on the bypass. Either transfer the existing policy to your name or take a new one from the date of sale. Don't ride on a policy in the seller's name.

Take everything that belongs with the bike: the spare key as well as the main one, the registration certificate, the service record, the policy papers and any helmet or cover included in the price.

Talk about history, too. Ask the seller how the bike has been used, when it was last serviced, whether it has had an accident, and whether any fines are outstanding. A quick search of the registration on the challan portal tells you the last part. A seller who is leaving happily will usually tell you the rest.

Check the bike. A colleague's scooter may have been ridden hard on the bypass for a few years. Look at the tyres, brakes and battery, and have it serviced soon after you take it over.

Once all that is in hand, moving it is easy. Most bike moves around Technopark are short, and a scooter loads in minutes. If you're shifting flats yourself, the bike can go with your things, or on its own.
