Bike Shifting in Pampady

The Pampady packers page is about the one heavy or awkward thing that decides an entire move: a safe, a generator, a stone grinder. For the bike side of a move, that one thing is sometimes a scooter fitted with side wheels.

These conversions are common across Kerala. Two small wheels are mounted on a frame beside the rear wheel, so a rider who can't balance or put a foot down safely can still ride on their own. For that person, the scooter is independence: getting to work, to the hospital, to friends. Getting it to the new home safely, and ready to ride, matters more than almost anything else in the move.

The side wheels change the job.

Width comes first. With its side wheels on, the scooter is far wider than a normal bike. It may not fit beside other bikes on a shared carrier, and it may not fit through the gate or the ramp a normal bike uses. Measure its full width at the survey.

Strapping is different. A normal bike is held upright by straps pulling down on the frame. A side wheel scooter already stands on its own, and straps that pull hard can bend the side wheel frame. The crew tie it to the frame of the scooter, not the conversion, and chock the side wheels.

Removal is a choice. Some conversions unbolt easily, and the scooter then travels like any other. Others are welded or tricky to refit. Ask the workshop that fitted it whether it should come off. If it does, have the same workshop refit and check it at the new home before the rider uses it.

Delivery needs a level place. At the new home, the scooter needs a level bay with room to get on and off, ideally close to the door, without steps or a steep slope in between. Check this before the move. A beautiful new house whose only parking is down three steps is no use to this rider.

Plan the rider's day too. If the scooter is their only way to get around, the gap between collection and delivery should be as short as possible. A same day move within the district is ideal. For longer moves, arrange other transport for the days in between.

Paperwork may be special. A scooter converted for a rider with a disability may be registered as an adapted vehicle, and the rider's licence may carry conditions. Keep both with the scooter's papers, and check nothing needs updating at the new address.

A word on the rider's dignity. Some riders prefer not to be fussed over, and some families talk about the scooter as if its owner weren't standing there. Let the rider lead the conversation with the crew if they want to. They decide where it's parked and how the key is handed over.

Ask the rider what they need. They know their scooter better than anyone, including where to lift it, which parts are fragile and how they like it parked.
