Bike Shifting in Nedumbassery

Nedumbassery is defined by the airport. Staff housing, guest houses, families in the villages around it and the newer building that came with the airport all sit close by, and a lot of the moves here are tied to a departure or an arrival rather than a rental cycle. Someone leaving for a posting in the Gulf, a family closing up a house for a few years, a student flying out for a course.

When the person flying out owns a bike, it usually goes to a relative: a brother in Aluva, parents in a village nearby, a cousin in another district. The relative will keep it, ride it or simply look after it until the owner returns. That's a sensible arrangement, but it works far better with a few papers in place.

An authority letter is the main one. A short signed letter from the owner, saying that the named relative may keep, ride and maintain the bike, renew its insurance and pollution certificate, and deal with the police or the RTO on the owner's behalf if needed. Clip a copy of your ID and the registration certificate to it. Many relatives ride a family member's bike without one, and usually nobody asks. When someone does, at a check, after a minor accident or at the insurer's office, the letter settles it.

Give them the papers. Photocopies of the registration and policy belong with the bike. The originals can go with the relative or stay in a safe place at home, but they should be reachable without the owner, who will be thousands of kilometres away.

Check the insurance. A policy close to renewal is best renewed before you fly, in your own name, so there's no gap while you're away. Make sure it's valid, and that the relative who'll ride it is covered. Most policies cover any licensed rider with the owner's permission, but check the terms. Set a reminder for the renewal date, or arrange for the relative to renew it.

Think about the return, too. When you come back, on leave or for good, the bike will need a check before you ride it: tyres, brakes, battery and papers. Ask the relative to keep a note of anything done to it while you're away, a service, a repair, a fine paid, so you're not guessing on the day you land.

Decide what they may do. Can they lend it to someone else? Can they sell it if needed? Should they keep it running, or lay it up? Put the important points in the letter or a message, so there's no awkwardness later.

Leave a contact who can answer questions. The relative may need to ask something about the bike while you're travelling or settling in abroad. Give them a second contact in the family who knows the bike, in case you can't be reached for a day or two.

Plan the timing. Hand the bike over a few days before the flight, not on the morning. The last day before a long trip is always busier than expected.
