Bike Shifting in Thalaghattapura

The Thalaghattapura packers page explains a fact most people only discover on moving day: newer buildings park cars underground, the height bar at the basement entrance decides how far things are carried, and almost nobody checks it before booking.

For a bike, the height bar settles one question immediately. A carrier vehicle, even a small one, usually stands taller than the bar. It can't drive down to the bike's bay. The bike has to come up to the carrier.

That sounds simple, and mostly it is. But basement ramps in these projects are often long, steep and curved, with a polished or painted surface, and a bike being walked up them is heavier and harder to control than it feels on the flat. Coming down a ramp to a delivery bay is harder still.

Here's how it's done safely.

The carrier waits at the gate. It parks at the building entrance or on the road just outside, where there's room to lower its ramp. Security usually directs it; tell them in advance.

One person steers, one controls the brake. Walking a bike up a steep ramp, one crew member holds the handlebar and steers while another walks beside, ready on the rear brake, or behind to push. Going down a ramp, the person on the brake matters even more.

Engine off. The bike is walked, not ridden, up the ramp. Riding it out would be quicker, but the crew don't ride customers' bikes, and an owner riding up a crowded ramp on moving day isn't much safer.

Check the ramp surface. Painted ramps are slippery when wet or dusty. If it has rained, or the cleaners have just mopped, wait or take it slowly.

Mind the curve and the traffic. Cars come down the same ramp. Ask security to hold traffic for a minute while the bike comes up, especially on a blind curve.

Plan for the lift as an alternative. In a few buildings, a goods lift goes down to the basement. Scooters are sometimes moved that way, but most associations forbid vehicles in lifts, and the ramp is usually simpler. Ask first.

Measure before booking, if you're curious. The height bar's clearance is usually marked on it. If it's unusually high, a small vehicle might fit, but in most projects it won't, and planning for the walk is simplest.

At the delivery end, the same applies in reverse. A new building with a basement means the bike is unloaded at the gate and walked down to its bay, with the brake held the whole way.

Think about the gate itself. Some projects have a boom barrier and a separate pedestrian gate. A bike walked up the ramp may need the boom raised, or the narrow side gate held open, before it reaches the carrier. Ask security which one to use.

And check the delivery building's rules. Some new blocks only allow moving vehicles at the gate during set hours. Find out before the carrier sets off.

If your bay is at the far end of a lower basement, mention it. Two levels of ramp and a long walk add a little time, and the crew will plan for it.

Heavy motorcycles need extra care, especially on a long, curved ramp. A big cruiser or touring bike on a steep ramp needs three people rather than two, and the bike should be in gear when parked on any slope. Tell us the model at booking.

An electric scooter in a basement is often parked by a charging point. Walk it up with the power off, so a twist of the throttle can't jerk it forward on the ramp. Unplug and pack the charger. Give its make on the booking call.
