Bike Shifting

Bike Shifting in Kodathi, Bangalore

Moves into Kodathi are often into large new towers, sometimes with a floor plan very different from the old flat. The parking is usually below ground, across two or three basement levels, with ramps between them, separate entrances for different towers, and two wheeler areas that may be on one level only. A bike can easily end up on the wrong level.

It happens simply. The carrier truck can't usually go down into the basement, so the bike is unloaded at the top of the ramp or at the entrance. The crew wheel it down the first ramp they find, to the first two wheeler area they see, and park it. Later you discover your allotted bay is two levels further down, under a different tower, and the ramp between the levels is steep.

So find out exactly where the bike goes before the delivery.

Ask the facility manager or the association for your bay number, the level it's on, and which entrance and ramp lead to it. Ask whether two wheelers have their own ramp or share with cars, and whether there are times when ramps are closed or one way. Many towers have one way ramps during peak hours.

Walk the route yourself once. Go from the point where the truck will stop to the bay, and note any turns, ramps, speed humps or narrow points. Look for the signs on the pillars that mark the level and the bay numbers.

Then give the crew clear directions. A short note with the bay number, the level, and two or three landmarks works well. Better still, a photo of the bay with the pillar number visible. Best of all, meet the crew at the top of the ramp and walk down with them.

Ask about the ramp gradient. Basement ramps in new towers can be steep, with tight turns. A heavy motorcycle pushed down a steep ramp needs a crew member holding the brake, and pushing it back up is much harder. If the slope is steep, it may be easier for you, or someone with a licence, to ride the bike down slowly once it has been unloaded.

Check the lighting and the access card. Some basements are dimly lit, especially lower levels, and a bike being wheeled in the dark is more likely to clip a pillar. Some lower levels need an access card or a tag to open a gate or barrier. Have yours ready.

Tell security which level you're going to as well. In some towers, guards stop anyone wheeling a bike between levels and ask whose it is, which is a good habit but slows things down if they haven't been told. Let them know the time and your bay, and the crew can pass without explaining.

When the bike reaches the bay, check it's straight within the lines and not blocking a car's door or a fire exit. Basement bays in new towers are often marked tightly.

Our Kodathi packers page covers labelling cartons so each one reaches the right room. This page applies the same idea to the bike and the right bay.

Before Your Bike Is Collected in Kodathi

  • Fuel

Ride the tank down to reserve in the days before collection. A small amount is fine; a full tank is not wanted on a loaded vehicle.

  • Papers

Photocopies of the RC, the insurance policy and your photo ID travel with the bike. Keep the originals, especially the RC, with you. If the RC is not in your name, mention it when you book.

  • Condition record

Photograph the bike from every side and at the odometer. The crew also notes its condition at pickup, and you keep a copy of that note.

  • Insurance

  • At delivery

Check the bike against the pickup note and your photographs before signing, and point out anything new while the crew is still there.

  • Handover

If someone else will hand over or receive the bike, tell us who when you book, and we will confirm what they need to have with them.

Good to Know

What a Bike Move Does Not Include

  • We do not ride your bike to the new address. It travels on a vehicle, standing upright and strapped at the frame.
  • Ride the tank down to reserve before pickup. A near empty tank is safer on a loaded vehicle.
  • We do not repair, service or start a bike that will not start. Tell us at booking so it is loaded the right way.
  • Helmets, jackets and tools travel in a carton or with you, never strapped to the bike.
  • RC transfer, address change and re-registration in a new state are yours to do, or an agent's.
