The stories tend to be similar. A scooter arrived with a long scratch down its side panel. A motorcycle's mirror was snapped. A tank had a dent nobody could explain. The driver said it was already there. The company said the driver was a subcontractor. Nobody had written anything down at pickup, so there was nothing to prove otherwise.

Most of that is preventable, and it comes down to a handful of questions asked before booking.

Who actually comes? Ask whether the crew and the vehicle are the company's own or arranged through someone else, and who is answerable if the bike is marked. A clear answer, in writing, matters more than the price.

How is the bike tied? Ask where the straps go. The right answer is at the frame, with soft loops under hooks and padding at contact points. If the answer is "we tie it to the side", or nobody knows, that's how panels crack.

Is it standing upright on its own spot? A bike laid down, or wedged between furniture, is a bike that gets marked. It should stand upright, tied, with nothing leaning on it.

Is there a condition note? The single most useful thing in any bike move is a written note at pickup, listing every existing scratch and dent, signed by both sides, with a copy for you. Without it, any later damage is your word against theirs.

Are photographs taken? Ask the crew to photograph the bike from all sides at pickup, and take your own. Do it again at delivery, before signing.

What does the transit cover actually pay for? Ask what's covered, what's excluded, and how a claim is made. Get the declared value written on the quote.

Who do you call if something's wrong at delivery? A name and number, not a general helpline.

If the answers are vague, look elsewhere.

A low price deserves a second look, too. A quote far below others often means a crew paid by the job, a vehicle hired on the day and no one answerable afterwards. Compare what's included line by line before choosing on price alone.

On the day, follow through. Stand with the crew at pickup, walk round the bike together, read the condition note before signing it, and keep your copy. At delivery, check the bike before signing anything, in daylight, and write any new mark on the receipt there and then.

Keep your own copies safe. Keep the pickup photographs together on your phone, in an album for this move, and keep the paper condition note with the bike's papers until the move is closed. If a question comes up a week later, you'll know exactly where they are.

And look at the company's paperwork before the day: the quote should name the bike, its registration number, the pickup and delivery addresses and the declared value. If any of that is missing, ask.

If something does go wrong, raise it at delivery, with photographs. That's when it's easiest to resolve.

With an electric scooter, list the screen, the port's flap and the battery bay on the condition note as well. Ask how the scooter will be tied without straps crossing the floor panel. Give its make on the phone.
