New bikes come with a set of free services from the dealer, usually two or three, each due within a certain number of months or kilometres, whichever comes first. They cover labour and sometimes some consumables, and they are an important part of keeping the warranty in good standing. The service booklet or the dealer's app shows the schedule. Check it before the move. If a free service is due within the next month or two, or within a few hundred kilometres, plan for it.

You know the dealer, they know the bike, and the service record stays in one place. If the service finds anything, there is time to fix it under warranty before the bike travels.

If the timing doesn't allow that, most manufacturers allow free services at any authorised dealer, not just the one where you bought the bike. Find the authorised service centre nearest your new home, and ask whether they will honour the free service coupon or digital record. Most will, but some ask for the original invoice or the service booklet, so keep those with the papers, not in a packed box.

Heading to another city? Look up the maker's service centres there. Most mainstream makers do. Some newer or premium brands, including several electric scooter makers, have smaller networks, and the nearest centre may be farther away than you expect.

Don't let the window lapse. If the free service is due by a certain date or kilometre reading, and the bike is on a truck that week, it will be late. Most dealers allow some grace, but not all, and a missed free service can raise questions if a warranty claim comes up later. Ask the dealer what grace they allow.

Think about accessories bought with the bike, too. Dealers often fit a crash guard, a seat cover, a number plate frame or a tank pad at the time of sale, sometimes as part of a package. Check they're tight before the move, since a loose crash guard can rub against the frame on a truck. If anything fitted by the dealer has a fault, raise it during the free service, while it's still easy to have it replaced.

Note the odometer reading before the bike is handed over, and photograph the dashboard with the date visible. The truck doesn't add kilometres, but a record of the reading helps if anyone questions the service interval.

Ask the dealer to stamp or update the record for any paid work done alongside the free service, such as a new chain set or brake pads. A complete history is worth more than a partial one if you ever sell the bike.

After the move, book the service as soon as the bike is settled, and keep the job card with the booklet.
