Bike Shifting in Hulimangala

Hulimangala sits on the quieter side south of Electronic City, where villa layouts, plotted developments and newer independent houses have come up among older village homes. Families move here for space, and some are moving because space has become essential: a parent who now uses a wheelchair, a relative recovering from surgery, an older person who cannot manage stairs. Those families look at the new house differently. The question is not only where the furniture goes. It is whether the house works for one particular person from the first day.

A two wheeler does not sound relevant to that, and it is more relevant than people expect. The gate, the drive, the porch and the path to the door are exactly where a bike tends to be parked, because a porch is handy and the bike is used daily. A wheelchair needs a level route at least one chair's width clear. A scooter parked half on the ramp, a motorcycle leaning on the gatepost, a helmet hung on a rail that was meant for a hand. Small things, and each one can block the only way in.

So the order of decisions matters. First the access plan: the ramp or level path from the gate to the door, the width of the doors, the bathroom, the lift if there are floors. Then the furniture. Then the bike, last, in whatever space is left that does not touch any of it. Many houses here have a side or a rear area that suits a bike well, and some do not. Walk the house with a tape measure and mark a spot, with the path and the turning space drawn in, before the carrier is booked.

We will not deliver a bike onto an unfinished path. If the ramp is still being built, the mason is still on site or the new bathroom rail is not yet fixed, tell us, and the delivery date moves. A bike is a separate job, so it can wait a few days without disturbing the household. Storage in Bangalore holds it in between, priced after a survey. That is far better than a scooter standing in a porch that somebody has to pass.

It is worth measuring, not guessing. Stand where the chair will turn and mark the floor. A bike's handlebar is wider than people remember, and a scooter's mirrors catch on doorframes and on a chair's arm. Measure the bike too, and compare the two numbers, before the day.

There is a people side as well. On the day the crew is loud, the gate is open, and dust is in the air, none of which helps a person who tires easily. Let a relative or friend be with the family member while the bike and the household are loaded. Bring them to the house only when their room is ready and the path is clear.

If the bike belongs to the person using the chair, or to the carer who does the errands, say so when booking. A scooter is often the fastest way to fetch medicines or reach a clinic, and a few days without it matters. We can plan its arrival for the first days, in a spot that is useful and out of the way.

A last thought about the weeks that follow. Needs change after a move. A path that seemed fine turns out to have a lip, a bay that seemed out of the way gets used as a turning space, a carer finds the scooter is in the wrong corner. None of that is a failure. If the bike needs shifting a few metres, shift it, and do not leave it where it is because it was placed carefully the first time.

Electric scooters have a particular risk here: a charging cable. A cable across a path is a trip hazard for anyone, and a wheelchair can catch on it. So place the bay with its socket where the cable never crosses a route. Battery stays inside the scooter on the carrier, and the receiving end's conditions are agreed when booking.

If the socket is not yet fitted, ask the electrician to do it before the scooter is delivered.
