Bike Shifting in Puzhakkal

Puzhakkal gets a request most locality pages never mention: the move that doesn't leave the building. A family taking a larger flat two floors up, a landlord shuffling tenants between blocks, someone moving to the side of the building that gets less afternoon sun. For the bike, the move is even shorter. It's already in the complex's parking. It just needs a different bay.

So, in most cases, you don't need a carrier.

Find out your new bay. When you take the new flat, ask the association or the owner which bay comes with it. In many complexes, bays are tied to flats, so moving flats means moving bays. In others, parking is first come, first served, or allotted separately.

Check the new bay. Walk to it from the lift you'll use every day, and see how long the walk is with shopping bags. Is it the same size as the old one? In a different basement, or at ground level? Covered or open? A top box or broad crash bars can make a tight bay tighter, so check the fit.

Note who parks either side. A neighbour with a large car that swings wide, or a row of bikes that block the exit, is worth knowing about before you settle in.

Ride or wheel the bike over. It is the shortest bike move most people will ever make. If the bike runs and is legal to ride, take it to the new bay yourself, at a quiet time. If it doesn't run, wheel it, with someone to help on any ramp.

Update security. It takes two minutes at the desk and saves an awkward morning. Tell the security desk the bike's registration number and your new flat number. If the complex issues parking stickers or access cards for vehicles, swap the old one for a new one. Otherwise the guard may stop the bike at the gate the next morning, or ask about the stranger parked in someone else's bay.

Think about the timing with the household. On the day the flat's contents are carried up or across, the lift and the corridors are busy. Move the bike to its new bay the evening before, or after the household is done, keeping it clear of anyone carrying a wardrobe past the parking.

Free the old bay. Take everything from it: the cover, the helmet hook, the lock, the pump, the rag. Sweep it. The next occupant will want it empty, and the association may check.

Think about charging. If your old bay had a charging point for an electric scooter, check whether the new one does too, and whose meter it's on.

When does a carrier make sense? If the bike doesn't run and the route between bays involves stairs, a long ramp or a different building, or if the bike is a heavy motorcycle and there's nobody to help, a short carrier move may be easier. That's rare within a complex, but it happens.

If the new flat is in a different complex across town, the bike moves like any local move, on a carrier or with the household.
