Bike Shifting in Payyoli

Bikes along the Payyoli coast pick up fine beach sand on every ride near the shore. It packs into the chain, the brake calipers and the wheel bearings, and a long run on a carrier grinds it in. A wash before collection keeps it out.

Bike Shifting

Bike Shifting in Payyoli, Kozhikode

Payyoli is a coastal town, and many of its houses sit within reach of the beach. Bikes here are ridden along sandy lanes, parked on sandy plots, and splashed by spray on breezy days. Fine sand gets everywhere: into the chain and sprockets, the brake calipers and drums, the wheel bearings, the suspension seals, the switches and the gaps under the seat.

In daily use, a bit of sand is part of coastal life. Riders get used to a chain that crunches a little, brakes that squeal now and then, and a dust of sand on the seat each morning. But sand is abrasive. Left in the moving parts, it wears them faster, and on a long run strapped to a carrier, with the bike vibrating for hours, sand already in the chain and bearings grinds away quietly.

The packers page in Payyoli worries about glass, the showcase and the crockery. For the bike, the coastal enemy is sand.

So wash it out before collection.

Rinse the bike with fresh water. A garden hose on a gentle setting is ideal. Use a gentle flow, not a high pressure jet, which can drive sand further into the bearings and seals. Rinse from the top down, paying attention to the chain, the sprockets, the brake areas and around the wheel hubs.

Clean the chain properly. It is the part that suffers most from sand, and the cheapest to protect. A chain cleaner and a brush lift the sand and grit that a rinse won't. Dry the chain and lubricate it, so it isn't left bare.

Check the brakes. A squeal on the last ride before the move is a sign worth acting on. Sand in drum brakes and disc calipers causes squeal and wear. A mechanic can clean them in a few minutes if they're bad.

Wipe the switches and the seat. Sand in the handlebar switches is the reason many coastal bikes have a horn that works one day and not the next. Lift the seat and brush out the boot.

Mind the mirrors and lamps as well. Fine sand carried on the wind scratches plastic lenses over time, and a cloth dragged across a sandy headlamp makes it worse. Rinse before wiping.

Look at the suspension. Front forks on coastal bikes are often gritty just above the seals. Sand around the fork seals can cause leaks. Wipe the exposed fork tubes clean.

Think about the cover too. A bike cover kept on a coastal bike holds sand inside it, against the paint. Shake it out and wash it before the move, or replace it at the new home.

Dry the bike thoroughly, ideally in the sun, before it's wrapped. A wet, sandy bike under padding is the worst combination.

Park it on a hard surface the night before, not on sand, so it isn't picking up more by morning.

Keep a small brush in the boot after the move, too. A quick sweep of the floorboard and chain after each beach ride is the easiest habit a coastal rider can keep.

At the new home, if it's inland, the bike will thank you. If it's another coastal spot, make the rinse a weekly habit.

Payyoli bikes are collected by vetted partners from the Kozhikode coast, who know from our booking note that the bike has been washed and dried. We set the figure in writing and stay accountable.

Our Payyoli packers page covers glass, showcases and crockery in coastal homes. This page is about the sand in the bike outside.

Scooters

Scooter and Scooty Shifting in Payyoli

A scooter's floorboard and boot fill with beach sand quickly, and its small wheels and drum brakes suffer most. Sand gathers on the floorboard, so scooter and scooty shifting in Payyoli begins there: raise the mat, sweep out the sand, rinse gently and let the scooter dry fully before collection.

Electric

EV Scooter Shifting in Payyoli

An electric scooter on the coast collects sand around its hub motor and charging port. Brush it out rather than hosing hard, and keep the port cover shut. At booking, share its brand and whether the cells come out.

Intercity

Two Wheeler Transport from Payyoli to Other Cities

Bikes leaving Payyoli for another city spend hours on a carrier, and sand left in the chain and bearings wears them all the way. Wash it out first. Kilometres decide that fare, and a two wheeler that leaves clean arrives with its moving parts intact.

Checklist

Before Your Bike Is Collected in Payyoli

  • Fuel

Ride the tank down to reserve in the days before collection. A small amount is fine; a full tank is not wanted on a loaded vehicle.

  • Papers

Photocopies of the RC, the insurance policy and your photo ID travel with the bike. Keep the originals, especially the RC, with you. If the RC is not in your name, mention it when you book.

  • Condition record

Photograph the bike from every side and at the odometer. The crew also notes its condition at pickup, and you keep a copy of that note.

  • Insurance

Transit insurance is available on a value you declare. Keep the bike's own motor insurance valid for the journey as well.

  • At delivery

Check the bike against the pickup note and your photographs before signing, and point out anything new while the crew is still there.

  • Handover

If someone else will hand over or receive the bike, tell us who when you book, and we will confirm what they need to have with them.

Good to Know

What a Bike Move Does Not Include

  • We do not ride your bike to the new address. It travels on a vehicle, standing upright and strapped at the frame.
  • Ride the tank down to reserve before pickup. A near empty tank is safer on a loaded vehicle.
  • We do not repair, service or start a bike that will not start. Tell us at booking so it is loaded the right way.
  • Helmets, jackets and tools travel in a carton or with you, never strapped to the bike.
  • RC transfer, address change and re-registration in a new state are yours to do, or an agent's.
