Bike Shifting in Munnar

Munnar sits at about sixteen hundred metres, with mist for much of the year, a long monsoon and nights cold enough that things stop drying. On the coast, a damp bike dries out in a day. Up here, it doesn't, and by the end of a wet week the seat smells and the switches misbehave.

Bikes move up to Munnar with plantation staff, teachers, resort workers and families, and down again when postings end. Either way, the climate shapes the job.

The battery is the first thing to think about, because it is the part most likely to let you down on the first cold morning. Lead acid batteries lose a good part of their power in the cold. A battery that started the bike easily in Kochi may struggle on a frosty Munnar morning, especially if it's a few years old. If you're moving up, test the battery on the plains and replace it if it's weak. If you're moving down, a battery that has struggled for years in the cold may be near the end anyway.

Damp is the second, and it is the one people underestimate. Seats soak up moisture and stay damp. Switches and connectors corrode. Headlamps and instrument panels fog from the inside. A bike moving down from Munnar often carries months of damp in it, and a bike moving up needs protecting from it.

The rule for the move is simple: nothing goes on the truck wet. If the bike has been out in the mist or rain, dry it before it's wrapped. A wet bike wrapped in padding and plastic for a few hours, or a day, comes out wetter, with condensation under the wrap. Wipe it down, let the seat air if possible, and dry the switches with a cloth. If it's raining on the day, a short delay for a dry spell is worth it.

The hill road is the third, and in the monsoon it can be the deciding one. Bikes coming up from the plains, or going down, travel winding ghat roads with sharp bends and steep gradients. A carrier suited to the hills, a daylight run and firm strapping with a front chock all matter. In the heavy monsoon, landslips can close stretches; check the news before the day.

Check the tyres and brakes for the hills, too. Steep descents work the brakes hard, and wet roads in the mist need tyres with good tread. A bike moving up from the plains should have both checked before it goes, and one that has spent years on Munnar's slopes will have worked them harder than most.

Bring the bike's papers in a sealed plastic folder, not loose in the boot. Paper goes soft and limp in Munnar's damp within weeks, and a registration certificate that has turned to pulp is a nuisance at any check.

At the new home in Munnar, find a covered spot, ideally out of the wind. A breathable cover, not a plastic sheet, lets moisture escape. Start the bike regularly, even if you don't ride it often, to keep the battery charged.
