Bike Shifting in Cherthala

It looks easy. A scooter weighs little more than a hundred kilos. Two strong people can lift it. A neighbour has a pickup. What could go wrong?

Quite a lot, in practice.

The lift is awkward. A bike has no good handholds. People grab the mirrors, the seat, the panels, the number plate. Those bend, crack and come off. When one end goes up faster than the other, the bike twists and someone's hand gets caught.

There's no ramp. Without a proper ramp, the bike is lifted straight up to the height of a pickup's bed, then dropped the last few centimetres. Suspension and side stands don't enjoy that.

The tie down is improvised. Most borrowed vehicles have no proper anchor points. The bike is held with a rope round the handlebar and a hope. On the first speed breaker on the highway, it leans, the rope slips, and it lands on its side.

Nobody is insured for any of it. The neighbour's vehicle insurance doesn't cover your bike as cargo, and your bike's own policy may not cover damage while it's being carried informally. If the bike falls, it's your loss. If a person is hurt lifting it, that's worse.

So what does a proper single bike move look like?

A carrier with a ramp and fixed anchor points. Soft straps on the frame, not the handlebars. Padding at the panels. A crew who load bikes every day and know where to hold them. And a written figure and condition note before anything happens.

A few things make a single bike move smoother. Tell the person receiving it when to expect it, and give us their number. Leave the papers with the bike or with them, not with you two towns away. And if the bike is a gift to a son or daughter, start the change of ownership at the same time, so the new rider is properly insured from the first ride.

Think about the receiving end as well. A daughter's house in Thuravoor or a son's rented flat in Kochi may have no ramp, a narrow gate or parking shared with other tenants. Ask the receiver to check where the bike will stand before the carrier sets off, and to clear a path to it. The crew will wheel it into place, but they can't conjure a parking space that doesn't exist.

And if you do decide to ride it there yourself, because the distance is short and the bike is road legal, that's fine too. Check the tyres and brakes, wear a helmet, and take the quieter road rather than the highway. A ride is often the simplest single bike move of all.
