Moving Insurance Guide: How to Protect Your Valuables During Relocation

You've spent years (and lakhs of rupees) building your home — furniture, appliances, electronics, and irreplaceable personal items. When you hire packers and movers, what happens if something gets damaged or lost during transit? This is where moving insurance (also called transit insurance) comes in.

Despite its importance, moving insurance is one of the most misunderstood aspects of relocation. Most people either skip it entirely ("nothing will happen") or don't understand what's actually covered. This guide explains everything clearly.

What is Transit Insurance?

Transit insurance is a policy that covers your household goods against damage, loss, or destruction during the moving process — from the moment items are loaded onto the truck until they're unloaded at the destination.

It is separate from your home insurance (which only covers items at your home address) and your vehicle insurance (which doesn't cover goods inside the vehicle).

Types of Moving Insurance

1. Carrier's Basic Liability (Usually Included)

Most professional movers include basic carrier liability in their quote. However, the coverage is extremely limited:

  • Covers only total loss (e.g., truck accident, fire, theft of entire consignment)
  • Does NOT cover individual item damage (scratches, dents, breakage)
  • Payout is based on weight, not value — typically ₹20–₹50 per kg
  • A 50 kg TV worth ₹80,000 would only get you ₹1,000–₹2,500 under basic liability

Bottom line: Basic carrier liability is essentially worthless for valuable items.

2. Declared Value Protection

You declare the total value of your goods, and the mover's liability is limited to that declared value. This is better than basic liability but still has limitations:

  • Covers damage to individual items
  • Payout is based on depreciated value, not replacement cost
  • Typically costs 1.5–3% of declared value
  • Deductible: ₹1,000–₹5,000 per claim

3. Comprehensive Transit Insurance (Recommended)

This is a full insurance policy from a licensed insurance company (not the mover). It provides the best protection:

  • Covers damage, loss, and destruction — including individual items
  • Payout at replacement value (not depreciated)
  • Covers natural disasters, accidents, fire, theft, and mishandling
  • Typically costs 3–5% of total goods value
  • Claims processed by the insurance company, not the mover

For moves worth ₹5 lakh or more, comprehensive insurance is a must. The premium of ₹15,000–₹25,000 is negligible compared to potential losses.

What Does Moving Insurance Cover?

Typically Covered

  • Breakage of fragile items (if packed by professionals)
  • Dents and scratches on furniture
  • Water damage (from rain or flooding)
  • Fire damage
  • Road accidents
  • Theft (of entire consignment)
  • Natural disasters (earthquakes, floods, cyclones)

Typically NOT Covered

  • Items packed by the owner: If YOU packed it and it broke, the insurance won't cover it. This is the #1 reason claims get rejected.
  • Mechanical/electrical failure: If your fridge stops working after the move, it's not covered unless there's visible external damage.
  • Pre-existing damage: Scratches or dents that existed before the move.
  • Jewelry, cash, and important documents: These should always be carried personally.
  • Perishable items and plants
  • Items not listed on the inventory: If it's not on the list, it doesn't exist for insurance purposes.

How Much Does Moving Insurance Cost?

₹2,00,000₹3,000₹6,000₹10,000
₹5,00,000₹7,500₹15,000₹25,000

₹20,00,000₹30,000₹60,000₹1,00,000

How to File a Moving Insurance Claim

Step 1: Document Damage Immediately (Within 24 Hours)

  • Take clear photos and videos of ALL damaged items at the time of delivery
  • Note the damage on the delivery receipt BEFORE signing it
  • Do not dispose of damaged items or packing material until the claim is settled

Step 2: Notify the Moving Company (Within 48 Hours)

  • Send a written complaint (email preferred for documentation trail)
  • Include photos, inventory numbers, and a description of the damage
  • Request a claim form

Step 3: File the Claim

  • Fill out the claim form with item details, purchase price, and repair/replacement cost
  • Attach photos, purchase receipts (if available), and the signed inventory list
  • Submit within the deadline (usually 7–15 days from delivery)

Step 4: Assessment

  • The insurance company may send a surveyor to inspect the damage
  • Keep the damaged items and packing material until the surveyor visits
  • The surveyor's report determines the claim amount

Step 5: Settlement

  • Typical settlement timeline: 15–45 days after claim submission
  • You can choose repair or replacement (the insurer decides which is more cost-effective)
  • If you disagree with the settlement amount, you can escalate to the insurance ombudsman

Tips to Maximize Your Insurance Protection

  1. Always opt for professional packing: Self-packed items are almost never covered.
  2. Create a detailed inventory: List every item with its approximate value. Photo/video inventory is even better.
  3. Keep purchase receipts: For high-value items (electronics, appliances, furniture), receipts speed up and increase claim settlements.
  4. Read the fine print: Understand exclusions, deductibles, and claim deadlines before signing.
  5. Inspect at delivery: Don't let the movers leave until you've checked all items. Once you sign the delivery receipt as "received in good condition," your claim becomes much harder.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is moving insurance mandatory?

No, it's optional. But for intercity and international moves, we strongly recommend it. The cost is a small fraction of potential losses.

Can I buy insurance separately if the mover doesn't offer it?

Yes. Companies like TATA AIG, ICICI Lombard, and New India Assurance offer standalone marine/transit insurance policies. Your mover will need to provide the transportation details.

Does insurance cover damage to my house (walls, floors) during the move?

Transit insurance typically does NOT cover property damage. However, reputable movers like Globe Relocation take preventive measures (floor protectors, door frame padding) and will repair minor damage at their cost.

What if the entire truck is stolen or involved in an accident?

This is covered under all levels of insurance, including basic carrier liability. Full loss due to accident, fire, or theft is the most straightforward claim scenario.
